Cottonwood Bluffs is a river town of twenty thousand people in a valley walled in by wooded ridges, with an interstate along its south side, farms past the river and an army base on the hill. Nine weeks ago a fever filled the hospitals; then the riots came, then the news went off the air, and then the dead got up. The bitten do not die straight away: they turn the first time they fall asleep. The army held the town for a few weeks, then flew out. The rest of us stayed. Find food. Find people. Find a door that locks. Then decide what kind of survivor you are.
Là où tout a commencé
the Fall
Nine weeks ago a fever filled the hospitals across the state: high temperature, bites from patients nobody could explain, and the bitten sleeping it off and waking as something else. In ten days it was everywhere. The riots came, then the news went off the air, then the phones and the power. The army came into Cottonwood Bluffs in the third week, held the bridge and the hospital and fenced in the high school as a shelter. The shelter fell in a night. Two weeks later the helicopters flew out of Fort Reed on the hill and did not come back. Nobody knows how far it reaches. The radio says there is a safe zone up north.
Les terres
Hughes County
the Town
Cottonwood Bluffs on its river bluffs: Main Street, the hospital, the mall, the high school, the interstate exit and the neighbourhoods around them
Cottonwood Bluffs still looks like a town from a distance: the water tower, Main Street, the high school's lights on poles. Close up the doors are open, the cars are where they stopped, and the dead stand in the shade.
Hickory Flats
the Farms
the flat farm country past the river: corn and soybeans, dairy barns, grain elevators and farmhouses with the doors shut
Past the river the farms are quiet, with full barns, locked doors and a rifle in every window. The dead are fewer out here, and the living watch the road.
Walnut Range
the Ridge
the wooded ridges north and west of town: Fort Reed on the hill, the Deer Ridge woods, the prison at Iron Mills and the radio mast on Turkey Ridge
Up on the ridge the woods are thick and quiet. Fort Reed's gates stand open on the hill, a helicopter came down in the Deer Ridge woods with the army's last cargo, and at Iron Mills the inmates hold the prison.
Aspen Basin
the North
the lake country over the ridge to the north, on the road the radio says leads to a safe zone
Over the pass to the north the road runs into lake country the radio says is safe. Nobody who went north has come back to say.
Qui tu peux être
Human
The survivors of Cottonwood Bluffs and its valley: townspeople, farm families, truckers caught on the interstate, guards and inmates, kids who lost their parents and parents who lost their kids. Present-day clothes going ragged, whatever weapon was at hand, and nine weeks of hard choices behind every face.
