Worldtable vs AI Dungeon

Both let you type what your character does and have an AI answer. The difference is who decides what happens. In AI Dungeon the story model writes it. In Worldtable the AI narrates, and game code keeps the map, the fights and the money.

The short version

  • AI Dungeon is a freeform AI storyteller for any genre, with a huge library of community scenarios, a choice of AI models, mobile apps and a free tier with paid memberships.
  • Worldtable is a place to build a fantasy world and let people play in it. An AI voices every character, but a simulation underneath decides what's true: where things are, how far they are, who won the fight and who remembers what.
  • Pick AI Dungeon for open-ended storytelling in any setting. Pick Worldtable if you want a world with consequences that stay put, and that you can share with a group.

Where AI Dungeon is the better pick

  • Any genre, no rules. If you want to go wherever the story takes you, with nothing holding the AI to a map or a damage formula, that freedom is the point of AI Dungeon.
  • A vast library to start from. Years of community scenarios mean there's something ready to play in almost any setting.
  • Model choice for players. Its memberships let each player pick from many story models and bigger context.
  • Native mobile apps. Worldtable is a web app you can add to your home screen.

Where Worldtable is different

Most AI games fall apart the same way: nothing stays true for more than a paragraph. The tavern moves, the wound quietly heals, the villain forgets who you are. Worldtable deals with that with ordinary software. The language model sits on top of a simulation and describes what happens. It doesn't get a vote.

  • The map was drawn before anyone played. When the narrator sends you somewhere, it's a real place, three days' ride down a road that already exists.
  • Everything is written down. Injuries, coin, inventory, titles and what every NPC privately thinks of you are stored, not left in a prompt. Come back in a month and the innkeeper still remembers the tab you never paid.
  • Fights you can lose. You describe a feint or a desperate swing; the engine reads it for tactics and risk and rolls. It isn't rooting for you.
  • You can build it. The World Studio turns six questions into a drafted world: land, peoples, magic, a cast of rulers and villains, lore and its own money. Then you edit it and invite people in.
  • Rules in words, kept in code. Whether heroes die for good, how dangerous the world gets, how many companions can follow one hero: you pick in plain words, and the engine holds the storyteller to it.

The docs mark, for every mechanic, whether the engine enforces it or the storyteller is only told.

Questions

Is Worldtable an AI Dungeon alternative?
Yes, if what you want is a world that stays put. Both let you type what your character does and have an AI write back. In Worldtable the AI only narrates: the map, travel time, fights, money, injuries and what NPCs think of you are kept by game code, so they don't drift between scenes.
Is Worldtable free?
Building is free, and your first $1 of AI is covered. After that a world runs on its builder's own AI key (OpenRouter or any OpenAI-compatible provider), so the builder pays the provider directly at its own prices. Players never pay.
Can I play with friends?
Yes. A world's builder invites players with a link, or lets people ask to join from the world's public page. Everyone shares the same world: walk into a town and other players' characters can be there, and turns in one place are taken one at a time.
Does Worldtable do every genre like AI Dungeon?
No. Worldtable is built for fantasy worlds: maps, kingdoms, magic, roads and ports. If you want science fiction, horror in a modern city or a freeform story with no rules at all, AI Dungeon is the better fit.
Can I choose the AI model?
The builder chooses. A world can run on any model available on OpenRouter, or on any provider that speaks OpenAI's chat API, using the builder's own key.
