Fantasy Name Generator

Names for characters, towns and kingdoms, in twenty-three styles from Old English shires to dwarven halls. Pick what you're naming and how it should sound, then click any name to copy it. Every name is new: the generator learns how a style sounds from hundreds of real and invented names and builds fresh ones from those sounds.

How the names are made

Each style is built from a list of names in one tradition: English villages, Norse farmsteads, Arabic oasis towns, or invented elven and dwarven words. The generator breaks those names into syllables and records which syllable tends to follow which. A new name is a walk through those pairings, so it sounds like it belongs to the style without copying any one name from the list.

Town names use the full length of the style. Kingdom names start shorter and pick up the endings that style uses for countries: -land in the north, -ia in the south, a 'Guo' or '-guk' in the east. People's names cut the same chains shorter for a given name and add a family name that often sounds like a house or a home town.

Making a name fit your world

Give each people one or two styles and keep to them. If every town in the north sounds Nordic and every town in the south sounds like the desert, players can tell where they are from a name alone, and a name that breaks the pattern becomes a clue: a Celtic name in a Nordic land says someone came from elsewhere.

Say the name out loud before you keep it. If you stumble on it at the table, your players will too. Short names (two syllables) suit places people mention often, like the home town or the capital. Save the long ones for ruins, old empires and places spoken of with some ceremony.

Names are the start

Make the whole world: a map, its peoples, its magic and a villain with a plan. The free world generator names its towns and regions with this same engine, in the style you choose.

In the World Studio you build a world on a real map, set its rules in plain words and invite players. An AI game master voices every character while the game engine keeps the map, the fights and the money honest.

Questions

Is the fantasy name generator free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limit. Generate as many names as you like and use them in your books, games and campaigns.
Are the names made by AI?
No. They come from a Markov chain, a simple statistical model that learns which syllables follow which in a list of names, and then builds new names from those patterns. It's the same name engine the Worldtable World Studio uses to name every town and kingdom on a builder's map.
Can I use these names in my book or game?
Yes. The names are generated, not taken from anyone, and you're free to use them in anything, commercial or not.
Why do some names look strange?
The generator invents names, and now and then an invented name misses. Press More names for a fresh batch, and keep the ones that sound right to you. Small edits help too: change a letter or drop an ending.
