Kingdom Name Generator

Names for kingdoms, realms, provinces and empires. Kingdom names are shorter than town names and take the endings each tradition uses for a country: -land in the north, -ia across the old empires, -guk and Guo in the east. The default is Nordic. Try Imperial for an empire, or Elven for a realm that was old before humans came.

How countries get their names

Most real countries are named after a people, a ruling family or a landmark, plus an ending that means 'land of'. England is the land of the Angles; Lombardy is the land of the Lombards. The generator does the same: it makes a short root and adds the ending its style uses, so a Nordic realm becomes Laupland or Grimstania and an Imperial one becomes Pulia or Dialoria.

Once you have the kingdom's name, you have its people's name too. Drop the ending and add one: the people of Gjeverland are Gjevers, the people of Vibapulia are Vibapulians. Use the root for the language and the royal house as well, and the kingdom will feel lived in.

Kingdoms, duchies and empires

A world map reads best when its realms sound different from one another but each sounds like itself. Give each kingdom its own style, and name its towns in the same style from the town generator. Provinces and duchies inside a kingdom can share its style with shorter, plainer names.

Empires often carry the name of the city that founded them rather than a people. Take a city name from the city generator and add 'Empire of' or an -ian ending.

Names are the start

Make the whole world: a map, its peoples, its magic and a villain with a plan. The free world generator names its towns and regions with this same engine, in the style you choose.

In the World Studio you build a world on a real map, set its rules in plain words and invite players. An AI game master voices every character while the game engine keeps the map, the fights and the money honest.

Questions

Can I make empire names here?
Yes. Switch the style to Imperial or Ancient empire, which build country names from Roman, Greek, Mesopotamian and Persian roots.
Why are some kingdom names one short word?
Not every style adds an ending, and not every name gets one: real countries include both Wales and Wallachia. The fantasy styles (elven, dwarven, orcish, draconic) never add endings, so their realm names stay in the invented language.
How do I name the kingdom's towns to match?
Use the same style in the town name generator. The World Studio does this for you: each region on a builder's map gets a style, and its towns are named in it.
