Fantasy City Name Generator

Names for great cities: capitals, harbour cities, holy cities and the old seats of empires. The default style is Imperial, built from Roman and Greek place names, because a city that sounds like it has stood for two thousand years usually has. Switch styles for desert trade cities, eastern river capitals or elven spires.

A city name carries history

Cities are older than the kingdoms around them, and their names show it. A Roman-sounding name like Rhamnos or Laurum suggests a city founded by an empire that has since fallen, now ruled by people who speak a different tongue. That contrast is worth using: give the city an Imperial name and the surrounding region a Nordic or Celtic one, and the map tells a story of conquest without a word of lore.

Many real cities have two names, the old formal one and what people call it. Generate a long name for official use and shorten it for the street: a Pinakyntho everyone calls Pina.

Capitals and ports

A capital should be easy to say, because everyone in the realm says it. Port cities often take the name of the bay or river mouth they sit on, so a Desert or Nordic name ending in a water word fits. Holy cities sound good in an older style than the rest of the country, as if the faith arrived before the kingdom did.

Names are the start

Make the whole world: a map, its peoples, its magic and a villain with a plan. The free world generator names its towns and regions with this same engine, in the style you choose.

In the World Studio you build a world on a real map, set its rules in plain words and invite players. An AI game master voices every character while the game engine keeps the map, the fights and the money honest.
