Fantasy Village Name Generator

Names for the small places: hamlets, farm villages, crossroads and market villages. The default style sounds like the English countryside, the kind of name a village has had for a thousand years. Switch to Celtic, Nordic or Germanic for other countrysides.

Why village names sound old

Villages keep their names longer than cities do. A city gets renamed by conquerors and kings; a village of forty families keeps calling itself what it always has, until nobody remembers what the name meant. That's why the Old English style works so well here: names like Tutham or Knaleley sound worn smooth by centuries of use.

A village name can still hint at what's there. Something ending in -ley was a clearing in a wood, -field was open land, -ham a homestead, -thorpe a small outlying farm. Your players won't know the etymology, but the names will feel consistent if you keep to it.

Villages in a campaign

Keep a short list of village names ready before a session. Players wander, and a name you pull out without hesitating makes the world feel planned. Note one thing about each village beside its name, like a feud, a festival or a strange well, and you have a place.

Names are the start

Make the whole world: a map, its peoples, its magic and a villain with a plan. The free world generator names its towns and regions with this same engine, in the style you choose.

In the World Studio you build a world on a real map, set its rules in plain words and invite players. An AI game master voices every character while the game engine keeps the map, the fights and the money honest.

Questions

How is this different from the town name generator?
It's the same engine with a different default style. Village names here start in Old English, which sounds rural and old; the town page starts with names built from plain words. You can switch the style on either page.
What styles suit villages?
Old English, Celtic, Germanic and Nordic all sound like European countryside. For other settings try Northern marsh (Finnic and Hungarian), Slavic, or Islands.
Can I use the names commercially?
Yes. They're generated, not taken from anyone, and you can use them in anything you make.
