Battle Maps Are Live
Every single-player fight now plays out on a map of the place you're in.
Fights now play out on a real map. Every single-player fight gets one: a tavern brawl, a bandit ambush on the road, a cave, a pier, a ruined temple.
How it works
- The map is the place you're in. A tavern fight happens around that tavern's tables and doors. A roadside ambush gets the road, the trees, and the river by the bridge.
- You still just write what you do. "Shove him off the bridge" puts him in the river. Step back out of reach and the maul swings at empty air.
- Enemies announce what they're about to do, and it shows on the map before it lands, so you can dodge, take cover, or hit first.
- Spells change the ground. Fire leaves the floor burning, ice walls block a charge, roots pin people in place, and smoke, thorns and frost stay on the squares where they landed.
- Things break. Throw someone through a cart and the cart is wreckage. Wreckage inside a building stays for an in-game day, so come back that night and the tables are still smashed.
- The game works out the damage, not the storyteller. Every hit, fall and slam is counted by the rules and shown on the map.
- Tap someone or something on the map to put its name in your action.
- On desktop the map sits above the story, and you can drag it to resize. On phones it's a strip that follows you and whoever is closest, and you can tap it to open it full screen.
Party fights don't get a map yet; they work the same as before.
World map art
- Forests, scrub, marsh and ruins have new art for zoomed-out views that blends into the close-up art as you zoom in, so trees aren't mountain-sized from far away.
- Mountains, hills and dunes get close-up art when you zoom in near them.
- Volcanic land, wastes and glaciers have their own art now. They used to look like plain grassland or tundra.
- Zooming in on Firefox is much smoother.
Towns have their own lore and prices (World Studio)
- Builders can write lore for any town. The storyteller treats it as canon whenever someone is there.
- Prices can be set per region or per town (cheap, usual, dear, ruinous), with local items and a note about trade there. The currency is the same everywhere; what changes is what each place charges. Sea voyages cost more or less depending on which port you leave from.
- Hob can edit both for you.
Play your private world with Claude Code or Codex
- In a private world, your own Claude Code or Codex can be the storyteller over MCP. It runs on your own Claude Code or Codex plan, and Chronicle makes no AI calls of its own.
- Setup is one command to paste into your terminal, shown on the connect page.
- You can also build and edit your world from that chat.
